Travel Security

Sri Lanka takes the safety of its tourists seriously, and several measures have been put in place to ensure a secure and enjoyable visit.

One of the main initiatives is the Tourism Police Division, which is a special branch of the Sri Lanka Police dedicated to supporting and protecting international visitors. These units are stationed in popular tourist areas such as Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Negombo, Bentota, Hikkaduwa, and Arugam Bay, and they are trained to communicate effectively in English and assist tourists with any concerns.

The Tourism Police help in a variety of ways, including offering travel safety advice, helping in case of theft or lost items, resolving disputes, and guiding visitors through local laws and customs. Tourists can approach these officers freely for directions, emergency support, or help with travel-related issues.

To stay safe, visitors are encouraged to keep copies of important documents like passports and visas, use registered tour guides and transportation, avoid traveling alone at night in unfamiliar areas, and be mindful of their belongings, especially in crowded places. Emergency contact numbers, including

the general police hotline (119

and the

Tourist Police hotline (+94 11 242 1052), are available 24/7.

Sri Lanka is generally considered a safe country for travelers, but as with any destination, using common sense and staying informed helps ensure a worry-free and memorable experience.
